I love to see other people’s painting practices from screenshots so I’m sharing one of mine from Black Panther with you! I struggle a lot when it comes to digital painting, but I love how unconventional you can be with textures and tools there. I tend to loose interest when it comes to rendering and it’s hard for me to create smooth color blends, but it’s also a lot of fun to work with light and values.

for a quick change of pace–i know we’ve all seen a thousand posts about voting, but what i haven’t seen (not yet) is one saying thank you.

thank you for those who made it out in the rain and the cold, who organized and canvassed and took on the onerous task of working with non-voting & conservative friends/family to change their stance if at least just this once. thank you for those who stood in line for hours, who had to travel because your voting place was moved, who had to jump through ridiculous fucking hoops to register, who weren’t inspired but showed up anyway for the disenfranchised and the greater good. thank you as well to everyone who voted early, absentee, and provisional.

it mattered.

Productivity culture will deceive you (especially if you are particularly high-functioning or a former Gifted Kid) into thinking that any use of your time that can’t be monetized or leveraged for your personal advancement is worthless, and I’m here to tell you that’s the devil talking. Do shit because you like it.

WHOA.

The big story tonight, honestly I think, are the ballot initiatives.  Here’s a partial list (note, I’m ignoring some really shitty ones, and the ones I know nothing about whatsoever, but…)

  • Colorado ended slavery in prisons
  • Florida added a constitutional amendment enfranchising felons
  • Maryland got same-day voter registration
  • Massachussetts got gender identity protection
  • Michigan got straight-ticket voting, automatic voter registration, same-day voter registration, and no-excuse absentee ballots as well as independent redistricting!
  • Missouri is getting $12 minimum wage by 2023 (currently it’s $7.85)
  • Nebraska expanded Medicaid
  • Oregon refused to ban public money for abortion

Then there’s taking the House, coming to a near miss in Texas Senate (get Beto more funding and have him take another shot in 2020, he’d do more good challenging for Senate again than running for President and losing the primary early), some state houses and senates, some governorships (even if not as many as we’d like)…

Over all, though it doesn’t FEEL like it because the big name races didn’t go great and the Senate got worse, this WAS a good night.

Caveat: these are all preliminary, but that’s what the numbers seem to show right now

I want to add one in my state: Washington votes to require all Law Enforcement to be trained in first aid, mental illnesses, and de-escalation techniques. They will also be required to administer first aid when needed and prove they attempted to de-escalate a situation. This absolutely will save lives.

Just to clarify, Massachusetts already has had gender identity protection since 2016 – this ballot measure was asking if it should be *removed* from the law. And people resoundingly said that we should keep it.

“There is a sense because the Republicans are going to hold on to the Senate that somehow Democrats didn’t perform. In 2010, Republicans gerrymandered the national map to a degree that was unprecedented in history. The fact that the Democrats have won back the House is massive. It could not have happened unless circumstances are – were what they are today, but it is historic. This victory is a big one for Democrats, and they should own that.”

“When we talk about waves and the size of them, we tend to be talking about one shade which, is it a blue wave? One color it is, the wave is pink because the 23 seats the democrats have flipped– the 23 seats that the Democrats have flipped, 15 of those are female candidates, and that is a big deal.” – Alex Wagner from Showtime’s ‘The Circus’
